At the Doctor

When you go to the doctor in Japan, it can be an anxiety-inducing experience, especially

if it is your first time. But be rest assured, visits to a clinic(クリニック) in Japan are

usually faster and easier than you would expect.

Your first step is going to the front desk and checking in. The nurses at the desk will give

you a medical questionnaire called a 問診表(もんしんひょう)for you to fill out

explaining your symptoms(しょうじょう)and medical history. Be prepared to also

provide your address (or where you are currently staying) and bring your resident card

and/or passport with you.

Usually there will be English versions of these forms as well, but you may feel more comfortable to have a Japanese friend accompany you, just in case.

Once you have submitted your 問診表(もんしんひょう), you will wait for what is

usually a short period of time. Depending on your reason for coming, you may be

directed to undergo some form of testing(けんさ) before speaking with the doctor

or you may go directly to consult with the doctor.

Some common tests that may be run:

妊娠検査(にんしんけんさ)- pregnancy test

血液検査(けつえきけんさ)- blood test

尿検査(にょうけんさ)- urinalysis

You may have your weight (たいじゅう)and height (しんちょう)measured and recorded, but usually only if you are simply there for a routine physical(けんこうしんだん).

Once the doctor has assessed your symptoms and test results, he/she will give you a

diagnosis and will prescribe you medication(くすり). Most commonly you will be prescribed antibiotics(こうせいぶっしつ)and/or painkillers(ちんつうざい)

In Japanese when we say a doctor prescribes a medication, we say:

薬を出す(くすりをだす)- to prescribe medication

Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be referred to a hospital

(びょういん) for further testing or surgery(しゅじゅつ).

*Visits to the dentist(はいしゃ)run in a pretty similar manner, but of course are focused

on matters of the mouth.*

Treating an illness

Now that you have a written prescription its time to head to a pharmacy(やっきょく)

*not to be confused with a drugstore(ドラッグストア)*

薬局(やっきょく) are usually located either next to or fairly close to clinics, so they shouldn't be too hard to find. Once at a やっきょく, you will hand over your prescription

and once again be asked to fill out a 問診表(もんしんひょう). These ones are a bit different, but don't worry. They have bilingual options available too.

Once you're done filling it out, simply hand it in and wait until they are done filling your prescription (again, it really doesn't take much time). When they hand you your filled prescription, it will come with a printed guide telling you what each medication does and when to take them. These are also available in both Japanese and English. You can now

go home and rest(やすむ)!(ノ≧ڡ≦)

*If you are more of a stay at home and self-treat kind of person, that is where

ドラッグストア come in handy. *

Drug stores in Japan have a very wide selection of medicine meant to treat a variety of conditions ranging from the common cold to a urinary tract infection and more. However,

the boxes are all written in Japanese, and it is not likely that a staff member will speak

English. In this case it is best to research the best drug store medications for your condition online before going so that you know what to look for.

And of course, if your condition does not improve, please go to a doctor!

Alright guys, that's it for today's lesson! If you have any questions or comments make sure

to leave them below and we'll get back to you (´∀`)

As always, がんばってね!
