The Difference Between い and な Adjectives

The main difference between い and な adjectives, other than the differences in conjugation, is that い adjectives can be followed by a noun as is, where as な must come between a な adjective and a noun.

For example:

adjective - 優し

--->やさしひと

---------->kind person(by nature)

adjective - 親切

--->しんせつひと

----------->kind person(by actions)

Conjugation of い and な Adjectives

The conjugation of い and な adjectives is a bit different.

For い Adjectives:

Non-past Affirmative - As is (~い

Ex. 嬉しです(うれしいです)happy

Non-past Negative - replace with くない

Ex. 嬉しくないです(うれしくないです)unhappy

Past Affirmative - replace with かった

 Ex. 嬉しかったです(うれしかったです)was happy

Past Negative - replace with くなかった

 Ex. 嬉しくなかったです(うれしくなかったです)wasn't happy

For な Adjectives:

Non-past Affirmative - As is (no )

Ex. 好きです(すきです)like

Non-past Negative - +じゃないです/ではないです/じゃありません/ではありません

Ex. 好きじゃないです(すきじゃないです)dislike

Past Affirmative - +でした

Ex. 好きでした(すきでした)liked

Past Negative - +じゃなかったです/ではなかったです/じゃありませんでした/ではありませんでした

Ex. 好きじゃありませんでした(すきじゃありませんでした)

To Become ~なる

To express the act of becoming something in Japanese, we use the う verb ”なる

When used with い and な adjectives it looks somethings like this:

い Adjective くなる *get rid of い!!*

Ex. 可愛なります(かわいなります)to become cute

なる(よなる)to become good *いい is irregular so it becomes よく not いく!*

なる(あつなる)to become hot *i.e. weather*

な Adjective になる *no な!!*

Ex. 変なります(へんなります)to become strange

有名なる(ゆうめいなる)to become famous

嫌いなる(きらいなる)to come to dislike

And that's all for today! Don't forget to leave any questions or comments you may have down below. I hope that you all learned something new today! (≧▽≦) Check out our resources tab for even more fun ways to learn Japanese!
